Disasters in Thessaly after Daniel and Elias storms
Description
In 2023, Thessaly was hit by two extreme storm events, Daniel and Elias. These were characterised as Medicanes and had enormous consequences in the infrastractures and environment in the whole region of Thessaly. Extensive flooding, collapse of the plain and mountain road network, extensive damage of the water supply networks, severe watershed erosion, exposure of bridge foundations or complete bridge failure, degradation of water quality in the Pagasetic Gulf and decrease of the Volos’ port water depth.
The session will review the causes and effects of these storms and will address the lessons learnt.
