Bridging Systems and Societies: Rethinking Resilience in Critical Infrastructures
Building resilience in critical infrastructure systems has become a pressing challenge as societies face increasing exposure to climate extremes, technological disruptions, and systemic interdependencies. This panel, hosted by the EU-funded projects ReCharged and SPARROW, will bring together academic researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to explore how resilience can be strengthened across the energy, transport, water, and communication networks.
The discussion will focus on emerging approaches to anticipate, absorb, and recover from shocks while maintaining essential services. Key topics include: leveraging digital innovation and data-driven tools to manage uncertainty; fostering cross-sectoral planning to reduce cascading risks; and enhancing governance frameworks to support effective crisis response.
Crucially, the panel will also address the social dimension of resilience, i.e., how communities experience and adapt to disruptions, how equity and vulnerability shape recovery, and how trust and communication between stakeholders can accelerate societal preparedness.
By bringing technical and social perspectives together, the session aims to identify practical pathways for building infrastructure systems that are not only technically robust but also socially inclusive and adaptive to future uncertainties. Participants will gain actionable insights and real-world applications from the two hosting projects relevant to researchers, operators, and policymakers seeking to reimagine resilience in a rapidly evolving world.
