Biography
Dr G.D. Bouckovalas is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.) specialized in Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. He is also Director of the Foundation Engineering Laboratory in the same University.
He has a diverse and extensive academic and technical experience, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as research and consulting in the areas of Soil Mechanics, Soil Dynamics, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and other special topics of Geotechnical Engineering. Professor Bouckovalas has been responsible for the supervision of numerous undergraduate and post-graduate diploma theses and Ph.D. Dissertations at N.T.U.A. He has been a fellow Researcher for the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (N.G.I) and Project Coordinator or Principal Investigator of more than 35 research projects. In addition, he has been the coordinator of the European Technical Committee 12 (ETC-12 / International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, ISSMFE) for the evaluation of the geotechnical aspects of the European Seismic Code 8 (Eurocode, EC-8).
His current research focuses on: (a) the performance based design (PBD) of shallow and deep foundations with the aid of fully coupled (effective stress, dynamic) numerical algorithms and Critical State elastoplastic constitutive models, and (b) the seismic verification of high pressure oil and gas steel pipelines under adverse environmental conditions (liquefiable soils, active fault crossings, landslides, etc.). Most recently, he co-authored the guidelines for “Assessment and Mitigation of Seismic Geohazards for Pipelines” of ASME (2019, Chapter 11, in press).
