Theme Lecture – Cascading effects of earthquakes and tsunami on buildings: from field to analysis
This lecture will present numerical work conducted to investigate the behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings subjected to sequential earthquake ground shaking and tsunami inundation. Different structural analysis techniques for the building performance assessment under the sequential hazards are compared as well as the sensitivity of the assessment to the approach adopted for applying the tsunami loading. The findings of the numerical structural assessment are also compared to field observations made by the author of the performance of reinforced concrete buildings affected by the 28th September 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Indonesia. From this evidence, some conclusions are drawn as to the relative importance of ground shaking versus tsunami inundation on determining building collapse probabilities under these sequential hazards.
